About Tena Youngberg...

Tena has been working in the field of adolescent substance abuse and chemical dependency since 1992 when she began working with a local youth agency. She has divided her time between clinical counseling and working as a drug/alcohol Intervention Specialist in local high schools.

Tena specializes in working with adolescents, young adults and their families as they move through the process of healing and understanding substance abuse. Her years of working with adolescents at a local youth agency and in local high schools; has kept her in touch with the trends of adolescents allowing her to easily connect with clients. She was one of the first drug/alcohol counselors to start working in local school districts where she developed and implemented programs to support students, families and staff around drug/alcohol issues.  These programs were eventually used in other schools through out the districts. She is well recognized for her work in several communities in helping others understand adolescent substance abuse. While working as a clinical counselor and Intervention Specialist in local school districts, Tena and a colleague played a major role in introducing Animal Assisted Therapy. District and Agency policies were changed to allow this unique approach to counseling.

Local television news stations and newspapers have recognized Tena’s knowledge of substances abuse and current drug trends.  She and her clients have been interviewed many times regarding drugs of abuse, addiction and Animal Assisted Therapy.  She is often asked by local community members to give presentations regarding Adolescent Substance Abuse and has built a reputation that is well respected.

As a drug and alcohol counselor, Tena understands that substance abuse and addiction rarely happens by itself.  Often there are other issues that are impacting the addiction or impacted by the addiction.  Therefore drug/alcohol counselors must be skilled at working with a multitude of issues.  Tena is also acutely aware that just because and adolescent or young adult is abusing substances, they are not necessarily chemically dependent.

As a parent with two grown children, Tena understands both personally and professionally the challenges faced in parenting.  These experiences have allowed her to approach counseling with compassion and without judgment. Tena currently lives on the Eastside where she enjoys traveling, reading and writing her book.
